Anxiety in small dogs is expressed in many ways. Do you recognize any of these behaviors in your own pet?
A phobic dog may panic when he's exposed to whatever stimulus he fears. In the case of a claustrophobic dog, Fido will become upset when he's confined in a small space, but not at other times. Once confined, he'll panic and may attempt to escape. Other signs of anxiety include trembling, diarrhea, a tucked tail or even self-destructive licking or biting, warns petMD. Don't confuse claustrophobia with separation anxiety, which is a separate issue. Dogs with separation anxiety may only become upset in a small space, such as a crate, when you leave but while not in your presence. Some dogs do suffer from both disorders and confinement can worsen a dog's separation anxiety, according to the Banfield Pet Hospital.
Finally, I've ordered a small Thunder Shirt: a product I found useful when helping another foster to overcome thunder and reactivity to men. It worked like a charm and I recommend it to clients. Now it's my chance to test it on Boozle's separation anxiety. A Thunder Shirt wraps around a dog's mid-section providing them a feeling of being held.

Separation Anxiety in Dogs - Small Dog Place
If you were a small dog you would understand why they have anxiety, they are towered over by humans all day long. Not only are humans taller than them but in most cases they are stronger, which can be very intimidating. Some dogs may handle the anxiety better than others, but they will all have moments where they need the comfort and support of a human to get them through. While we think of external threats as primary causes of fear and anxiety in dogs, genetics likewise play a major role. A study on dog breeds and their behaviors measured five dimensions of anxiety and fears in dogs when faced with various stress-inducing scenarios, such as meeting unfamiliar people, meeting other dogs, touch sensitivity, loud noises, and anxiety when separated from their human caretakers. The type of breed mattered greatly: small breeds were significantly more anxious than larger breeds, with the miniature or 'toy' versions of those same small breeds (e.g. Miniature Dachshund or toy Poodle) even more fearful. High on all five dimensions were the:Some puppies and kittens (), for reasons we do not entirely understand, retain their normal early fear of being left alone. Perhaps these were puppies that were removed from their parents too young or whose mothers were unavailable. Others come from families or breeds of dogs () genetically prone to anxiety. () Many, are multi-owner dogs that bounced from one home to another, from shelter to shelter. I am a licensed foster parent and many of the pets I have seen with this problem remind me a great deal of my foster children. Certainly some of these pets were abused; but only a small percentage of abused pets develop SA. Social risk factors for SA include early maternal rejection by the dame, lack of stimulation, poor maternal health, and neglect as a puppy. The owner’s personality types also play a part in this disease. Yet another expression of anxiety in small dogs, trembling can range from mild to severe. Some pets will only tremble when under some form of duress, such as when approached by strange people and animals, or during thunderstorms. Other dogs will tremble at the slightest noise.
