If separating and combing the mats out does not work, use scissors. Never cut the mat straight across next to the skin or slide the scissors beneath the mat. If possible, keep the comb between the scissors and your dog’s skin. Hold the scissors perpendicular to the comb and delicately slide the scissors through the mat in a sawing motion to loosen it. Or make small snips into the fur ball to loosen and remove it gradually. Although this may seem tedious, loosening the mat is easier than attempting to remove it completely all at once. Not only will it prevent you from haphazardly cutting into your dog’s coat and making the fur patchy, it will also prevent you from accidentally cutting or hurting your dog. If the mat is too large or tangled to remove with a scissors without hurting your dog, use an to remove the mat gently. When cutting mats out with trimmers, pay special attention to the area to make sure you do not cut too close to your dog’s skin.
Annmarie, you can use a less heavy duty clipper for a poodle with fine hair, but the real downfall is that most of these models (marketed specifically to pet owners through places like Petco) do not have interchangeable blades. Therefore, if the blade goes dull, you can't sharpen it, and you also have to rely on combs for a longer length, which can be frustrating unless your dog is perfectly combed out. The combs often get stuck on a matt and yank off of the clipper head, and then you end up cutting a huge super short gash in areas you were trying to leave the hair longer. Again, you do have choices with a fine haired dog like a poodle, but I like to stress that in grooming tools, you "get what you pay for". Glad you are going to try it, good luck, you can do it!

Pet Dog Cat Hair Trimmer With Comb + 2 Razor Cutting ..
Length of hair left when cutting against the natural lie of the coat, or on a dog with off-standing coat, such as a Poodle or Bichon Frise. Cutting with the grain of the coat on most breeds leaves it one blade length longer. For instance, a #7 blade leaves approximately 1/8" hair when going against, but will leave approximately 1/4" when going with the lie. The cut indicates the uniform length of hair which will be left when you use the designated blade. Higher blade numbers indicate shorter hair length ie: A #4 blade leaves 3/8 inch of hair, and a #40 leaves only 1/100 of an inch. For lengths longer than 5/8", use a blade guard or clipper blade comb. These dog grooming combs have much fewer teeth spread widely apart. The teeth are sharper for cutting through and removing mats. If other methods of removing mats do not work, a dematting comb will do the job. Hold the ear and comb downward to be sure there are no mats. Before trimming you want to be sure to hold the ear at its point where the leather ends. You want trim the ears evenly to the shape of the leather without cutting the skin. Repeat with the other ear. Stand back, call your dog's attention to look at you so that you can check the length of the hair on the dog's head and ears.Purple Dragon 7 inch 3PCS Rotary Screw Pet Grooming Scissors Comb Kit Dog Hair Curved Cutting and Thinning Shears Set >>> Click on the image for additional details.
