Nutro Ultra canned dog food receives the Advisor’s second-highest tier rating of 4 stars.
We chose to switch our dog to Nutro Ultra - Senior as she is 10 and we liked the amount of Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the food. This was by far a huge mistake. We saw over a 2-week period a progression from soft stools to terrible diarrhea. We also noticed a significant drop in her energy level. Since stopping the food and giving her Earth's Pride from BJ's Wholesale, we have noticed a complete 360. We thought we were doing a service for our dog and ended up finding out just how bad this food really is. Have also submitted a complaint with the FDA as nearly 1500 recent complaints shows a troubling pattern of neglect on this company's part.
I adopted a greyhound 13 years ado and and Nutro was recommended to me by the the rescue facility. In all all the years I had my beloved Ginger she loved the food and NEVER had any problems with it. I recently adopted a new greyhound after loosing Ginger to bone cancer( not related to the food at all) and have tried her on multiple holistic foods because I want to provide her with not only the best food but something she can enjoy. After months of loose stool and her picking through her food as to say Daddy I don’t like this I picked up Nutro Ultra large breed, she LOVES IT and her stool is much better. I discussed it with my trusted vet and she had no problem with it saying all dogs digest food differently and trusted the brand.( she did steer me away from smaller brands as she was concerned they don’t have the qualty controles in place like the larger brands) I know others dislike the brand but I trust it, my dog loves it and as long as they continue making it in the United States we are a Nutro family. I hope this helps at least one person in making a choice, I’ve made my self crazy looking at all the choices. Good day and love your pet!
Nutro Products Inc. is a subsidiary company of Mars Incorporated and offers dog and cat food. Their product lines include Natural Choice, Max, Ultra, and Greenies. NUTRO has had 78 recalls and withdraws since 2005 with an estimated 30 million bags/cans/containers of products recalled. In the past month, I converted my Terriers from Science Diet to Nutro. In past weeks, my pups have been vomiting bile daily. After online research, I decided to put my pups on a bland diet (chicken/rice). 2 weeks later "NO VOMITING". I wondered about the food since ALL 4 were experiencing the same issue, I am convinced something is very wrong w/ this food. I have most of the dog food, but only a partial bag because I use a bin for their food. I just begun conversion back to Nutro Ultra (WM) but after reading this, I think I need to stop feeding this as a precaution. These terriers are my kids, if I thought the food was causing this & continue feeding, I could never live with myself. My Shih Tzu Eli passed this evening and my Shorkie Tzu, Coco, is still in hospital. I am crying as I write this. Both have eaten Nutro Ultra small breed for two years. Late last week, we opened a new bag and it has gone downhill from there. Add in that the vet we were seeing did not take appropriate action and after several office visits this week, IV fluids and blood work for both, we have concluded that it must be the dog food. I am going to have it tested to leave no doubt. Eli was so precious. He was a rescue a couple of years ago and has been a blessing. We will miss him. I hope Coco makes it through. I can't lose her too.We were at Pet Smart and spoke w/ a sales rep. I don't recall if it was a Nutro rep. Well, we tried that food and everything seemed okay. We even gave her fresh select pet food, to mix in and change it up for her. We bought her 2nd bag, in Jan/Feb 2013, Ultra Nutro senior toy breed dry dog food. I didn't notice right away something was off, because I would put fresh select pet food on top. In less than 2 months, she passed in the night. I was devastated. She just had a checkup in Feb; she was healthy. People were shocked she had died, because they just saw her at the park. I took her everywhere w/ me.
