Compared to the placebo group, the dogs receiving omega-3 fatty acids had a significantly improved ability to rise from a resting position and play by six weeks after beginning supplementation, and improved ability to walk by 12 weeks. Additionally, compared to the control group, dogs receiving the fish oil had improved weight bearing on the affected limbs as assessed by force-plate analysis (an extremely humane testing method). No significant adverse side effects from the fish oil supplementation were reported.
We all know about the benefits of fish oil for us and for our dogs. Most dogs eat a processed diet, or a diet consisting mainly of factory farmed meats, and this causes an imbalance of fats, with an over-abundance of omega-6 and too little omega-3. This imbalance can lead to inflammatory disease such as allergies and arthritis.

EPA and DHA are found abundantly in cold-water fish. Flax seed oil contains ALA, another omega-3 fatty acid that requires the body to first convert ALA to EPA and DHA before utilization. Humans and dogs have limited ability to make this conversion, while cats have even less ability to make this conversion. Therefore, supplementation with high-quality omega-3 fish oil is recommended for humans, dogs and cats. EPA and DHA are found abundantly in cold-water fish. For centuries, canine and feline diets consisted of unprocessed foods rich in EPA and DHA, omega-3 fatty acids derived from algae, plants, and fish. However, most of today’s pet foods contain primarily omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable oils. Even the highest quality pet diets rarely contain adequate amounts of EPA and DHA. This results in an unbalanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 that can negatively impact the health of our pets.
Nordic Naturals omega-3 fish oil products help support optimal health throughout a pet's life. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential in the diet of dogs and cats due to an inability to produce these fatty acids from others consumed in the diet. The essential omega-6 fatty acids are linoleic acid (dogs and cats) and arachidonic acid (cats only). The essential omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, and DHA. Animals in different life stages have different requirements for these fatty acids. For example, a reproducing cat requires more arachidonic acid than a spayed or neutered cat, and a developing animal requires more DHA than an older animal. This is due to the different roles played by the fatty acids. Linoleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid are only found in plant-based oils such as corn oil, canola oil, or soybean oil. Arachidonic acid is found in the greatest concentration in animal fats, while EPA and DHA are found in the highest concentrations in fish oil.
