Luxury Dog Bed. Think I should make a couple of these to go outside for the girls in the summer!
There’s really no such thing as a ‘good outside dog.’ All dogs need time inside with the family to keep them happy, well adjusted, and . But when your dog’s hanging out in the yard, he’ll appreciate a place to get out of the elements–a dog house.
A cute dog house in wood that is designed to look like a cute birdhouse. This is a great option for very small dogs, although they should not be left outside in the dog house for long periods of time.
This is how we house and protect our outside dogs during winter.

HOWS stands for Houses of Wood & Straw, and the HOWS Project is a community service project which exists to construct wooden dog houses and deliver them, along with bales of straw bedding and other essential items, to outside dogs in Charlottesville and surrounding counties in need of more appropriate outdoor shelter. Having a job outside the house means having a good chunk of time that you are away from your dog. Here are 3 Great Strategies to Stop your Dog Barking When You’re Not HomeThe HOWS Project was created by Stacey Norris, its Project Coordinator, in 2008. Since its first year of operation - with the help of local schools' carpentry classes, Boy Scout troops, hardware and building supply companies, individual donors, animal control officers, and animal loving volunteers - the HOWS Project has built and distributed over 600 wooden dog houses to outside dogs (and a few goats and feral cats!) in need in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Louisa, Nelson, Orange, and Cumberland. HOWS recipients from current and past years, and other dogs that we encounter on our journeys, receive bales of straw bedding each fall/winter season; and other items such as water buckets, food bowls, nylon collars, leashes, and swivels to keep tethers from kinking are distributed as needed. Hundreds of dogs have benefited from our services. Whether your dog has short hair or not, if he is used to being inside and is abruptly placed outside (not that you would do that), a heated dog house will make the transition easier for him. Help an “outside dog” who is chained to a tree or a fence and has little to no protection from the rain, wind, snow, or sweltering heat. While we all believe that dogs deserve to live indoors and be treated like family, nothing makes a bigger difference to a dog who is forced to live outside than a sturdy house of his or her own—a place to lie down and retreat from storms and other extreme weather. That’s why PETA builds and delivers hundreds of sturdy, straw-filled doghouses to these lonely and neglected dogs, providing them with the only shelter that many of them have ever known.Countless dogs live outside in the Greater Kalamazoo area during the extreme weather common to Michigan in all four seasons. Many dogs are living outside without adequate shelter and have no where to go to get out of the elements. This is an unhealthy and potentially fatal situation for so many dogs in our area.
While it is not illegal to keep a dog outdoors, the law does require a shelter. Dog houses can be very costly and sometimes the cost is the only thing preventing the dog from being safe and protected. KHS is here to help, offering dog houses to owners who need them.
