One of the most popular dog breeds, according to the (AKC), purebred Yorkies have distinctive tan and steel gray or “blue” coats. Not surprisingly, the terrier’s coat can require considerable grooming attention.
The easiest grooming option is to trim Yorkies’ fur short. (No muss, no fuss!) But if the dog is destined to be shown, a long, luxurious coat is a necessity. In fact, the rules are quite specific for Yorkshire Terrier show dog coats. According to the AKC, the coat may be trimmed to floor length for easier movement and a neater appearance. Hair on the feet and the tips of ears can also be trimmed.

In January, investigators found several dozen Yorkie mixes in a dark room in the couple's home. The dogs’ coats were severely matted and tangled in feces, and many were suffering from ear infections, fleas and hair loss.Yorkie soft coats may be further defined as cottony or wooly. Neither is considered breeding- or show-quality. Wooly soft coats are thicker than cottony ones and may have undercoats. Soft coats are usually shorter than silk coats. They can be wavy. They are prone to mats. The fur length may vary over different parts of your soft-coat Yorkie's body. Many soft-coat Yorkies have a very large amount of fur for their body size; some breeders describe a soft coat Yorkie as a dog that "looks twice as big as he is."Yorkies come in three coat types: silk, soft and wiry. All are adorable little bundles of love, but only Yorkies with silk coats are considered breeding- and show-quality dogs. Wiry coats are easy to recognize, but it can take some deductive work to distinguish between silk and soft coats.Just one trip to the pet supply shop is enough to see that there's no shortage of clothing for dogs of all sizes, including your Yorkie. He will take to wearing coats and sweaters happily, mostly for the warmth they provide but you might notice that your little guy enjoys being dressed. You don't have to spend the kids' inheritance on outfits for the dog, though. Yorkies are so small that coats, sweaters and sweatshirts can be fashioned from your cast-off clothing, no sewing required. Just measure your Yorkie's back from his neck to his tail then cut the same length off the sleeve of an old sweater or sweatshirt. Snip some armholes in it three or four inches below the cuff, which can serve as a cozy turtleneck. Make sure that your Yorkie's new coat is close-fitting enough to keep him warm, but not so tight around his neck that it makes him uncomfortable or interferes with his breathing.
